Alcohol and Drug Abuse in Fall River, MA

Getting the whole picture when it comes to substance abuse is extremely important because it allows us to really assess and determine the severity of the problems related to alcohol and drug abuse in an area. This is why some of the following statistics will be from Bristol County, as this is the county that Fall River is part of. For example, in 2017, 21% of adults in Bristol County reported excessive drinking, whether by heavy or binge drinking. Alcohol-impaired driving is also a big issue, and just between 2014 and 2018, there were 62 deaths caused by it in the county, which accounts for 30% of all driving deaths for that same period. Another concern in Fall River is drug poisoning, and the Fall River Police Department reported that in 2018, there were 1024 overdoses and 62 of those resulted in death. Finally, there is the opioid epidemic, and in 2017 only, it was involved in 55 deaths in the city of Fall River, according to the Saint Anne's Hospital Community Health Needs Assessment of 2018. One good thing is that it is a decline from the 2016 number (64), but this does not mean it is not still a problem. In Fall River, the amount of hospital discharges related to opioids in 2014 shows us that this is not a new problem. There were 1,237 discharges for that year only, and it is in the top five of the highest numbers for Massachusetts cities. This is not something that can be overlooked, and an effective way to combat this is with treatment and prevention.
