Substance abuse happens for any number of reasons, and often it starts with recreational drug use. Misusing drugs or alcohol, even on occasion, has the potential to lead to more severe problems later in life. Within small cities such as Fallbrook are families and individuals who are struggling with drug addiction. Many people who are living in the larger metropolitan areas, substance abuse, has led to them becoming homeless. According to the same assessment mentioned above, over 8,500 people on any given night in the county are homeless. However, between 2017 and 2018, the number of homeless decreased by 6%. Approximately 41% of the homeless were sheltered, and 58% were unsheltered. Almost all of the homeless population within the county had a chronic health condition.
