There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Florida is a top state for addiction to drugs and alcohol. It is a retirement, tourism, and recreation state, which always makes for more addiction. More than eighty percent of the nation’s pharmaceutical companies reside in Florida too, which makes for a massive abundance of prescription drugs and resultant drug abuse in Florida. Florida is also a hotspot for drug trafficking from other countries. Finally, Florida has now become a major center for meth production and distribution. Inpatient or residential rehabilitation centers for drug and alcohol addiction are the solution to the drug problem in Florida. Coincidentally, Florida has a lot of rehab centers, but they are incredibly expensive and are usually unattainable. Thankfully though, thousands of drug rehabilitation centers do exist in Georgia and all across the nation that are affordable and are attainable. With the help of these centers, individuals who are struggling with addiction can make a full recovery. It will be important for the addict to attend a detoxification program to get rid of the physical addiction to the drug, and then follow that with a good drug rehabilitation program to now handle the psychological aspect of the addiction.

Problems with Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Florida

In the state of Florida, there are lots of issues related to substance abuse that have caused a great deal of damage in the community. One of these problems is with alcohol-impaired driving, and more specifically the deaths they have led to. The counties that have the highest number of deaths caused by alcohol-impaired driving are Hillsborough, Duval, and Orange counties, with 254, 206, and 199 deaths respectively. There are specific treatment programs for those who are struggling with alcohol addiction, and it normally begins with alcohol detox. The detox process is extremely important because it allows for the individual to go through and get rid of the withdrawal symptoms in a safe environment and under medical supervision. Once they are done, they can then attend a treatment program that will assist in addressing the reasons for their addiction and the contributing factors, so they can truly recover and lead a healthy life that doesn’t involve substance abuse. Even after finishing treatment, most centers will continue supporting the individual with aftercare services, to help them find housing and employment if needed, as well as counseling sessions and group support.

Florida’s Prevention and Treatment Programs for Substance Abuse

It is very crucial for every area to have both prevention and treatment programs because they can help either stop substance abuse or addiction before it happens, or in cases where the person is already suffering from addiction, they can be helpful in treating it and giving that person their life back. The Sunshine State has a great quantity of these programs and services available for its residents in many counties. For instance, there is the Hillsborough County Anti Drug Alliance (HCADA), and it helps on different issues, such as addressing alcohol abuse in colleges, helping pass legislation for the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, and substance abuse prevention smoking, both for cigarettes and marijuana. Then, there is the Lee County Coalition for a Drug-Free Southwest Florida, and their goal is to mobilize community members in different sectors to reduce substance abuse, and they help make people more aware of the prevention resources available. Finally, there’s InnerAct Alliance, and their focus is reducing the abuse of drugs and alcohol in youth, and they do this by offering prevention services in schools and in the community. As for treatment, one of the types of programs one can go through is an outpatient treatment, and it can be very accommodating because it allows for the person to have more freedom since they don’t need to stay at the facility, while still getting the help they need. But, truthfully, all types of treatment can be successful if the individual is committed to their recovery.
