Frederick County is a county that is located in the northern portion of the state of Maryland. Home to an estimated population of over 259,000 people as of 2019 according to the United States Census Bureau, Frederick County is one of the most densely populated counties in the state as of that time period. But this can present drawbacks, particularly during America’s drug epidemic with increased rates of addiction and overdose. From 2015 to 2017 there were 222 drug deaths in Frederick County according to a report published by County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, a rate which was one of the highest for any county in Maryland during that time period. This shows how badly drug and alcohol rehabilitation and detox services are needed to help save lives in that community.

But what can be very confusing for many people is why relapse is so prevalent despite increasing access to drug and alcohol treatment services. This can happen for a few reasons, and it is important to understand these so that we can make improvements in areas where we are failing people. One of the biggest reasons why this occurs is because people refuse to accept help during the early phases of addiction. This has become more problematic as drugs have become more and more powerful, particularly opioids like Fentanyl. Every bag of heroin is roulette, and the drug user never knows which one may cause a deadly overdose. So, if a person just began using heroin and nobody knows it can be tragic when they overdose, and their family learns of their drug use because of their death. Then, there is no way to help them.

This is why it is so important to confront loved ones on any suspicion that you may have. Even though you risk upsetting them, you also risk them being honest with you. It may never happen if you don’t push the issue. No one wants to look back and think they didn’t do everything they could to save someone’s life.
