GHB Treatments and Detoxification in California

GHB Substance Abuse Trends and Rehabilitation in California

In the year 2000, GHB or gamma-hydroxybutyrate was added to the United States Controlled Substances Act and listed as Schedule I drug. Schedule I drugs have a high potential for abuse and have no currently accepted medical use in the United States. However, in 2001, Xyrem was listed as a Schedule III drug because of it being used to treat narcolepsy. Throughout the state of California, GHB is a widely used recreational club drug, used mainly by adolescents and young adults. The right mixture of industrial chemicals can make GHB, and it is mostly sold online. GHB is often sold as a white powder and colorless and odorless when dissolved in liquid, but does have a slightly salty taste. GHB is incredibly dangerous when mixed with alcohol, and the effects of the drug can last three to six hours.

The growing popularity of GHB in many California communities have raised cause for concern. Some of the adverse effects of GHB include respiratory depression, a decrease in blood pressure, aggression, impairment of judgment, vomiting, weakness, sedation, hallucinations, and seizure-like activity. Young adults or adolescents in California who are using GHB recreationally are placing themselves at risk for drug poisoning. Within the state, many of the drug-related emergency room visits involving club drugs are found to be with GHB. Drug treatment programs within the state routinely help drug users who cite having using GHB and other types of club drugs at least once in their lifetime.
