All over the country and other places in the world, many people are experiencing substance abuse either directly or indirectly. Regardless of how addiction is experienced, it takes a toll on many including drug use, their loved ones, employers, friends and so much more. We have seen towns and cities completely devastated by the growing rate of substance abuse being seen nationwide. The state of Georgia is one of the many to experience high rates of addiction throughout the state. In Gwinnett County, Georgia there were 152 drug-related deaths in one year alone, in one county, as reported by the Gwinnett Post. We are constantly seeing a rise in drug deaths, causing a need for more efforts such as drug rehabilitation programs and detox facilities.
There are many different forms of drug rehabilitation programs that can make the process of finding drug treatment rather difficult. There are basically four main types of drug treatment including medical detoxification programs, outpatient, short-term inpatient, and long-term residential. The main difference between these four types of treatment is the level of care the patients will be receiving. Medical detoxification programs assist addicts that are going through withdrawal from the drugs or alcohol but they do not offer counseling so this is usually a good option to safely withdraw from the drugs and then seek out additional treatment to handle the mental and emotional side of the addiction. Outpatient programs are considered the lowest level of care as the patients only receive treatment once or twice a week for an hour or two at most. These types of programs offer addicts the option of continuing to work and live in the same environment while receiving some form of treatment however it is not always the most successful option as there is nothing stopping the individual from continuing to use drugs after each meeting.
The other two main forms of drug treatment include short-term inpatient and long-term residential. Both of these programs offer a safe environment where the patient will stay for the duration of the program. While enrolled in the program the individual will usually go through the initial withdrawal from the drugs or alcohol as well as receiving counseling for the mental and emotional aspects of the addiction. The short-term inpatient program is considered the traditional inpatient treatment with the programs lasting 28 to 30 days long while the long-term residential program offers a much lengthier program ranging anywhere from three months to one year in length. This is the highest level of care offered for those who are drug dependent as they are given ample time and assistance to handle the entire addiction. Regardless of the program, it is highly recommended that you seek out a drug treatment program if you are struggling with a drug dependency.
Substance abuse can have many adverse effects on the body including long-term health complications. Drugs are basically poisonous to the body and continued use can cause serious medical conditions. It is important to seek medical treatment if you are struggling with a substance abuse problem to ensure not only your safety while getting off the drugs but to ensure your continued success without the need for drugs or alcohol. Do not hesitate to seek out a drug treatment program immediately and regain control of your life, while living drug-free!
