Hospital Inpatient Detox Services for Substance Abuse in California

All throughout the state of California, many different types of drugs are abused and used recreationally. Unfortunately, when someone continually uses addictive substances for a lengthy period of time, they will develop a tolerance for the drug. Drug tolerances cause physical and psychological dependencies, and this will lead to a possibly dangerous detox in some circumstances. Hospital inpatient detox programs in California are inpatient programs operating out of hospitals or clinics to help addicts safely go through withdrawals. The hospital inpatient detox services in the state of California will provide more medical supervision with doctors and nurses on staff to meet the medical needs of the client. Drug detox is not easy, and many long-term drug users will require more medical supervision than what would be found at a standard drug detox program or outpatient treatment center in California.

Drug Overdose Rates and Treatment within California Prisons

In 2018 nearly 1000 men and women in California prisons overdosed and required emergency medical attention. Between 2015 to 2018, the number of inmates treated for drug and alcohol overdoses went from 469 to 997, which was a 113% increase. Most inmates survived the overdose, while 17 inmates died in 2006, and 40 died in 2017. The state of California has spent millions of dollars on methods designed to block the flow of illegal contraband into state prisons. However, drugs such as fentanyl find a way into the prisons resulting in numerous overdoses. There are 36 institutions part of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). These prisons are holding over 126,000 people, and incidents at prisons such as San Quentin and Solano remained steady from 2017 to 2018, with around 12 and 8 overdoses each year.

The health care systems within these prisons are committed to addressing these issues and taking proactive steps to help inmates who are struggling with addiction. The facilities are working to provide increased treatment options for inmates with substance abuse problems. The trend happening within the California prisons reflects a nationwide opioid epidemic, and millions of dollars are being spent on treatment programs within the California state prison system. Along with this, efforts are being made to block the infiltration of drugs into the prisons. Overdose deaths climbed to the fourth leading cause of death among California prisoners in 2017. Overall this outpaced deaths from infectious diseases, suicide, and homicide.
