Problems such as motor vehicle crashes are commonly linked to impaired driving. According to a Suffolk County Community Health Assessment (CHA) for 2014-2017, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in New York State. Teen drivers are inexperienced and take more risks when driving such as using drugs or alcohol while driving or driving recklessly. Substance abuse is linked to countless lives lost each year, especially with opioids. According to the Suffolk County medical examiner, deaths due to prescription pain medication rose by 70% between 2004 and 2011. Substance abuse treatment services within the county have routinely treated people who are addicted to opioids and other illicit drugs. As of 2020, many of the drug problems are connected to heroin and methamphetamine, although opioids are still a concern within the state and the county.
