Drug and alcohol abuse are problems that have been present throughout our country for several years, and substance abuse as a whole is an issue that is actively wreaking havoc to this day. In Kent County and its county seat, the town of Chestertown, it has caused an enormous amount of damage just in recent years. The following statistics will show us the degree to which this area of Maryland has been impacted by substance abuse. First of all, if we look at excessive drinking, we can see that in 2017, 16% of the county’s adult population reported either binge or heavy drinking, which is close to one-fifth of adults. This is a pattern of drinking that can only lead to devastation, and in some cases, even death. In fact, alcohol-impaired driving has caused 4 casualties between 2014-2018, representing 40% of the 10 driving-related deaths that occurred during this period. Finally, we have drug poisoning that led to fatalities as well, with a drug overdose mortality of 15 deaths per 100,000 population for 2016-2018, according to County Health Rankings. Providing adequate treatment services is extremely important to help reduce these statistics, as it ensures that those who need help will have it available. When someone makes the decision to get help and finds the appropriate program for them, the first step in the treatment process is normally detoxification. This is the safest option for someone to come off whatever substance they are addicted to, since it provides them with a completely drug-free environment that is supervised by substance abuse specialists. The withdrawal period can be quite difficult and challenging, so being away from their usual environment and given the opportunity to focus solely on their recovery. This will help take care of the physical side of their addiction, and the rest of their treatment will give them a chance to tackle the psychological aspect of it, which makes it as comprehensive as it can be.
