The town of Lancaster is part of Erie County located 14 miles east of Buffalo is a suburb part of Buffalo. The population of the city is estimated at over 11,200 people with a median age of 40 years old. The percentage of people living below the poverty line is approximately 5.1%. According to an Erie County New York Community Health Assessment (CHA), the percentage of residents in the county living below the poverty line is 15%. Poverty is a significant factor causing people to become addicted to drugs or alcohol. The city of Buffalo has a rate of poverty of 30% who are living below the poverty line. Erie County also saw a significant increase in opioid overdoses in the past few years when this assessment was put together. For example, in 2014, there was a substantial rise in opioid-related deaths in Erie County. In 2015 the number of opioid-related deaths reached 256 and the cause of deaths that year shifted from prescription opioids to illegal opioids. In 2016 the number of opioid-related deaths was 223 at the time of this assessment. Much has been done to help people who are addicted to or dependent on opioids, such as medication-assisted treatment, increased access to rehabilitation, education, and prevention, and drug take-back programs. Within Erie County are various treatment resources such as inpatient and outpatient treatment, detox, and aftercare services. As of 2020, drugs such as heroin and illegal street-level opioids are problematic within the county and across New York State.
