Long Beach is a city located in Nassau County south of Long Island on Long Beach Barrier Island. The population is estimated at around 33,000 people with a median age of 44 years old and a rate of poverty of 7% living below the poverty line. Various demographics are living within the city with approximately 34% of the population between the age of 25 and 44 and 18% under the age of 18. Substance abuse and addiction affect all demographics, and many addictions start during adolescence and progress into adult life. According to a Community Health Assessment and Community Health Improvement Plan (CHA-CHIP) for Nassau County, the hospitalization rates for emergency department visits and substance abuse were higher in distinctive communities than within the state as a whole. However, within the county, the rate of related opioid hospitalizations is much of the same across all the communities. Most opioid addictions start with a prescription for pain medication or leftover medication that is being misused. Drug and alcohol treatment programs within the county include opioid treatment options, medical detox, outpatient programs, and inpatient rehab. The process for treating an opioid addiction starts with medical detox to manage withdrawal cravings. Prescription opioid addiction has impacted many residents across the state. Substance abuse creates numerous socio and economic problems, and many addicts are unable to find the help they need.
