Alcohol and Drug Abuse in Loudoun County, VA

One of the issues that has been affecting Loudoun County is definitely alcohol abuse, and this will be proven by the two following statistics. First, we have excessive drinking, which 18% of the adult population reported doing in 2017, according to County Health Rankings. Then, there is alcohol-impaired driving, and between 2014 and 2018, it caused a lot of deaths, 26 more specifically. And, this accounts for 39% of all driving deaths for those years. Another problem that led to many deaths is drug poisoning, and for 2016-2018, the drug overdose death rate was at 101 deaths per 100,000 population. In 2017, there were also deaths caused by opioid overdoses, precisely 25 deaths, and 22 of those involved prescription opioids. We can see that the substance abuse problem in Loudoun County is not reserved for only one substance. Another type of treatment that can help someone recover from their addiction is a holistic program. This is something that one can find very beneficial because it addresses addiction with three main areas of focus: body, mind, and soul/spirit. This way, addiction is treated wholly and someone can know that during their treatment process, they will address every part of their addiction and what caused or contributed to it. Many have found this type of treatment to be successful, and in fact, any treatment can end in success if one is 100% committed to getting help and recovering.

They help reduce criminal activity on school grounds, by conducting drug searches with their canines, and they also offer a program directly used for the prevention of drug abuse. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program is offered in schools, first to educate students on the effects of drugs and the consequences they bring about so that they can then be provided with the tools to make good decisions and resist peer pressure. Law enforcement can be very helpful in preventing substance abuse, but some may be suffering from addiction themselves, as they often deal with highly stressful situations and are under constant pressure. This is why there are substance abuse treatment programs made specifically for law enforcement. They allow them to address the issues they are facing and learn how to deal with them without the use of alcohol and/or drugs. This way, they can get protecting their community, while also protecting themselves and being drug-free.
