The town of Lyons is located in Wayne County within the south-central part and also has a hamlet within it named Lyons. The population is estimated at over 3,300 people with a median age of 42, and approximately 20% of the population are living below the poverty line. According to the New York State Department of Health, the alcohol-related motor vehicle injuries and deaths are recorded at 41.6 per 100,000 population. There has been no significant change with this number and it is higher than the Finger Lakes region and the state. Additionally, the age-adjusted percentage of adult’s binge drinking is approximately 20.6%, which is higher than the Finger Lakes region and the state. Binge drinking is a problem that affects both adults and adolescents. Excessive drinking often leads to drug abuse, whether it is with prescription drugs or illicit substances. Per the New York State Department of Health, there were no heroin-related overdose deaths in 2018, yet there were 16 opioid pain medication deaths within the county. Opioid abuse has been an ongoing problem within the county and throughout the state. However, some counties were impacted worse than others. The substance abuse and addiction treatment resources within the county include inpatient and outpatient programs, and proper medical detox. Withdrawal management is essential for opioid addiction to ensure a smooth transition into a treatment program. Across the state of New York are numerous rehabilitation resources, such as state-funded and private programs.
