The hamlet of Mahopac is a census-designated place in Putnam County situated in the town of Carmel. Approximately 47 miles north of New York City, it is in the south-central part of the county and borders with Westchester County. Many of the drug and alcohol problems affecting this part of the state are overflowing from New York City. According to the New York Department of Health, the number of alcohol-related motor vehicle injuries and deaths in the county was 51.4 per 100,000 population, which was higher than the state and Mid-Hudson region average. Additionally, the age-adjusted percentage of adults binge drinking during the past month was 21.7%, which was also higher than the Mid-Hudson and state average. Alcohol-related incidents lead to numerous social and economic problems impacting the county and the state. According to a Putnam County Community Health Assessment (CHA) for 2013 - 2017, the suicide rate in Putnam County was increasing over the past three times, this assessment was put together. However, when compared to the New York State and the US the suicide rate was much lower. When people become consumed by drug and alcohol addiction, there are times where suicide is thought of. This occurs among adolescents and adults; the adolescent suicide rate in the county has been on the decline. Within five years, when this community assessment was put together, there were not adolescent suicides. Anyone struggling with addiction should seek help immediately. The first step will be a drug detox program followed by rehabilitation at a drug treatment center.
