The hamlet of Mastic is a census-designated place in the southeastern part of Brookhaven located in Suffolk County. The population is estimated at over 15,000 people with a median age of 35 years old, and approximately 11% of the residents are living below the poverty line. The chronic use of alcohol, opioids, or illicit drugs does increase the chances of death. An overdose occurs when too much of the drugs are consumed or when multiple drugs are used at once. Numerous addicts experience an accidental non-life-threatening overdose. When a family suffers through this, it is often a good time to intervene and help the addict access treatment. Drug treatment resources that can help people living in Mastic are available throughout the county. Substance abuse treatment resources include both outpatient and inpatient programs, along with suitable detox services. Medical detox is crucial for opioid addiction, such as pain medication or heroin. At the time of the community health assessment mentioned above, Suffolk County had the highest number of heroin-related deaths in the state. When choosing a treatment program, the facility must meet the needs of the patient.
