The town of Mexico is in the northeast part of Oswego County, and the population is estimated at over 1,700 people. Within any smaller community, the problems associated with substance abuse are often fell more because most people in the town know one another. The town has a median age of 35 years old and approximately 18% of the population is living below the federal poverty line. Throughout many parts of Central New York are communities where families and individuals are struggling with addiction. According to the New York State Department of Health, there has been no significant change with the number of people killed or injured due to drinking and driving. Currently, in Oswego County, the rate of death and injury is 49.7 per 100,000, which is higher than the Central New York Region and the state. Additionally, the age-adjusted percentage of adult’s binge drinking in the county is approximately 24.8%, which is also higher than the Central New York Region and the state. According to a 2018 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), between 2011 and 2015, the rate of alcohol-impaired driving deaths was 37.6% which was a steady increase from 2009 to 2013. Per this assessment, the age-adjusted rate of adults who binge drink in the county is currently 25%. Alcohol abuse is often the underlying problem for many people who are addicted to drugs. Binge drinking alcohol does have the potential to lead to the abuse of other drugs. The combination of alcohol and illicit drugs or prescription drugs is dangerous and is often the cause of countless overdose deaths within the state. There are drug detox centers and substance abuse treatment across the country to help anyone with any kind of addiction.
