Michigan has seen good and bad times, and as a result of economic bad luck of the last several decades, the state has become quite downtrodden in the aspect of drug and alcohol addiction. Michigan is one of the biggest states East of the Mississippi river, and there are many urban and rural areas in the state. Each of these areas, rural and urban, has attracted its own unique substance abuse problem.

Different Drug Problems in Michigan

The state of Michigan has many issues regarding substance abuse, as we’ve briefly seen above. First, the opioid epidemic caused a great deal of harm within the state. In 2017, 2 033 deaths were related to opioid overdoses, and 783 of them were related to heroin specifically. The prescribing rate for opioid pain pills was at 74 prescriptions per 100 persons in 2017. Drug overdoses in general also caused a lot of deaths within Michigan. The top three states with the highest drug poisoning mortality rate were Wayne County, with 2 007 deaths, Macomb with 963, and Oakland with 448 deaths. All of these rates were calculated per 100 000 population and between 2015 and 2017.

Prevention Efforts for Substance Abuse in Michigan

There are many organizations and programs in Michigan that offer prevention services for substance abuse. First, there is Parenting Awareness (PAM), which provides education services and resources for parents, all in order to promote parent’s awareness on alcohol and drug abuse. Then, there is the Michigan Higher Education Network (MIHEN), which provides resources and tools for colleges and universities, so they can work toward the prevention of substance abuse on their campuses. Finally, there is the Michigan Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking (MCRUD), whose mission is to help reduce underage drinking in its local population. All of this does a great part in the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse in the state of Michigan.
