Substance abuse has definitely been present in Middlesex County and its county seat, Saluda. The amount of damage it has caused only further proves that this is the type of problem that should always be taken seriously. These next statistics will focus on alcohol abuse, as this is what has brought the most harm to the community. In fact, County Health Rankings found that alcohol abuse has caused fatalities in the county, with 3 alcohol-impaired driving deaths between 2014 and 2018, accounting for 33% of the 9 driving-related deaths which occurred in this period of time. Some of these deaths may have been contributed to by excessive drinking, since it does lead to impaired judgment, and, in 2017, 15% of the county’s adult population reported binge or heavy drinking. Other health problems that excessive drinking can cause include lung infection, low blood sugar, a suppressed immune system, and an increased risk of anxiety and depression. When a person is struggling with drug and/or alcohol abuse issues, treatment is extremely important. There are many types of programs available, and one will be referred to a specific treatment based on different factors. For instance, if someone is taken by an addiction that is quite severe, a long-term residential program might be the most appropriate option. These treatment centers provide care 24 hours a day and normally, the duration of the program will be of three to six months or more. This is an intensive treatment plan, but it will take the person out of their usual environment completely and give them a safe space where they can focus solely on their recovery. It obviously requires a lot of commitment, but it is a comprehensive way to approach treatment.
