Minnesota’s best chance at beating drug and alcohol addiction on a long-term scale is by putting those residents who are addicted to drugs and alcohol into and through rehab centers for addiction. Such rehab centers need to be of residential nature and need to specifically be able to address drug and alcohol addiction. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, inpatient rehabilitation is the best chance by far that any addict has of beating their substance abuse problem for good. Inpatient drug treatment provides the most comprehensive environment for someone who wishes to overcome their addiction. Since they have to live at the facility, they can focus solely on their recovery for the duration of the treatment.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Minnesota Counties

There are many issues related to drug and alcohol abuse that Minnesota counties are facing currently and have been for a while now. First of all, there is drug poisoning, and between 2016 and 2018, some of the counties in the state lost a lot of lives to it. The drug overdose death rate for Ramsey County was at 276 deaths per 100,000 population, and for Hennepin County, it was at 598 deaths per 100,000 population. For those same two counties, the number of deaths caused by alcohol-impaired driving for 2014-2018 was 24 and 66 respectively, according to County Health Rankings. The opioid epidemic is also present in the state of Minnesota, and it has led to many people losing their lives. For 2017 only, opioid overdoses caused 45 deaths in Ramsey County and 150 deaths in Hennepin County. We spoke of how beneficial an inpatient treatment program can be, but outpatient treatment can also be successful. Although the person does not have to live at the center during their program, it can be very accommodating for those who have responsibilities to uphold. It does require that the person have a strong support system at home, since they may be more susceptible to stressful situations, but they still need to stick to their treatment plan.

Minnesota Counties’ Substance Abuse Prevention Efforts

Reducing substance abuse can sometimes be a very hard task in a community, but one thing that does help with this is prevention, and Minnesota has many organizations that work toward that. For instance, there is the Regional Prevention Coordinators, and they provide support services for individuals and organizations that help address the different root causes of drug and alcohol abuse. Then, there is the Substance Abuse Coalition of Kanabec County, and it offers services and programs for the county’s residents, so they can stay away from alcohol and other drugs. They have monthly meetings to help organize their work and include many members of the community in their mission to reduce substance abuse. Finally, there is the Kandiyohi County Drug Free Communities Coalition, which is a coalition that works for the prevention of substance abuse in the area. An important part of the community that needs substance abuse prevention is youth. But, sometimes, it happens that certain youth are already suffering from an addiction to alcohol and/or drugs. Well, there are drug treatment programs for youth, and with these programs, they can address the issues that brought them to abuse alcohol and/or drugs, and they will learn to deal with them without resort to any substance. This will give them another chance at leading a healthy and drug-free life.
