Each state in the nation is unique for its own reasons and in its own ways, and Missouri definitely has things about it that are true to that state alone. Sadly, it is not always the case that the aspects and the factors that make a state unique are always beneficial ones. The truth is, there is a pretty intensive and severe substance abuse problem in Missouri that has been ongoing for some time. More specifically, drug and alcohol-related crime is perhaps worse in Missouri than it is in any other state, at least on a per capita basis.

The best type of drug treatment for someone who is fully dedicated and can afford to leave for a period of time is residential drug rehab. It offers the most comprehensive program, as the person is required to stay at the facility, which means they are allowed to focus solely on their recovery and are given their best chance at sobriety.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Within Missouri Counties

The different counties are definitely facing lots of issues related to alcohol and drug abuse, but some have been affected more than others. For instance, when it comes to drug overdoses and the deaths they have caused, the counties that have had it worse are Jefferson County, Jackson County, and St Louis County. Respectively, their drug overdose death rate for 2016-2018 was at 305, 380, and 915 deaths per 100,000 population. These same counties also suffered a lot of fatalities due to the opioid epidemic. They respectively had 74, 56, and 250 deaths caused by opioid overdoses for 2017 only, according to the LiveStories Catalog. Finally, deaths were brought on by alcohol-impaired driving, especially in those three counties. For the 2014-2018 period, they had 47, 147, and 99 deaths caused by it, respectively. As far as treatment goes, although inpatient treatment is the more intensive program, its counterpart, the outpatient treatment, can be just as successful. It is more accommodating, as they are not asked to live at the facility to attend this treatment, so it can be very beneficial if someone has responsibilities to fulfill, such as their family, job, etc. But, it does require that they have a strong support system at home, as they will most likely be confronted with stressful situations, but still need to stick to their treatment and sobriety.

Missouri Counties' Prevention Efforts for Substance Abuse

Along with treatment, prevention is an extremely useful way to reduce substance abuse within a community. Throughout Missouri counties, there are many organizations that work to prevent and reduce substance abuse. For example, there is the Community Partnership's Prevention Resource Center, and they work to have a positive impact on substance use problems through different prevention initiatives. It serves a big part of Southwest Missouri and has helped many other prevention organizations offer their own services. There is also About Our Kids, Inc., which is a non-profit that has for many years been working on teaching useful skills to youth from kindergarten to 12th grade. The staff working for this organization are trained to address numerous behaviors that are risky for youth, and this includes drug abuse. There are also drug treatment programs for youth in the state of Missouri, to help those who are already struggling with drug and/or alcohol addiction issues and need a more comprehensive approach. These programs help address these issues and find their root causes so that the young person can go back to being a healthy and drug-free person.
