Morphine Detox and Rehab Treatment in Puerto Rico

Morphine is the main alkaloid Definition of the word alkaloids of opium. It was first obtained from poppy seeds in the early 1800s. Morphine contributed to or even started the opiate epidemic around the time of the Civil War. Morphine is a commonly used pain medication, and hospitals throughout Puerto Rico use the drug to treat varying levels of pain. Heroin is directly synthesized from morphine. And morphine is the precursor in many pain medications being abused in Puerto Rico. This includes pain relievers such as codeine, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, meperidine, and oxycodone. Opiate addiction is a wide-spread problem in Puerto Rico. In 2017 there were more than 600 fentanyl-related overdose deaths in Puerto Rico, with only 60 being reported.

As the use of fentanyl spreads throughout the island, the problem with opiates persists. The US Drug Enforcement Administration and local nonprofit organizations say the official information does not reflect what is happening within the territory. The Puerto Rican government has never kept a proper count of how many opioid-related deaths happen each year. Drugs such as fentanyl, where morphine is a precursor are produced locally. There is also non-pharmaceutical fentanyl being smuggled in over from China and India. This fentanyl is being mixed with heroin, cocaine, and marijuana, resulting in countless overdoses and death. Officials in Puerto Rico are also worried about legally prescribed pain medication.

Drugs such as hydrocodone are commonly abused throughout the island. Within six months through 2017, there was roughly 60 opioid prescriptions being given to every 100 persons in the territory. This was higher than the national average that year, and opioids are at the root of the problem. Morphine is the underlying cause for much of the opioid epidemic. When these drugs are broken down chemically, morphine is found. Puerto Rico is also used as a point where drugs such as heroin and cocaine are smuggled into the east coast of the United States. Almost 66,000 pounds of narcotics were seized in and around Puerto Rico from drug smugglers in 2017. There has been a recent pick-up of drugs being smuggled through Puerto Rico and the eastern Caribbean.

Abusing drugs such as morphine is highly dangerous. The abuse of this drug will come at a severe cost. Morphine creates an intense euphoria creating dependency and addiction. The body will develop a tolerance to the drug, which must be met with more morphine. If you do not meet what is needed, you experience withdrawal symptoms and begin to go through the pain of withdrawal. Medical detox programs in Puerto Rico can help morphine addicts through these difficult withdrawals. Once medical detox is complete, the best treatment approach is a residential drug rehab center. Inpatient treatment will force an addict to address the underlying issues connected to their addiction. Morphine addiction is not easy to beat, but with the right help, it is possible to achieve life-long sobriety.
