Mount Airy is a city that can be found in the northeastern state of Maryland. It is home to an estimated population of around 9,000 people as of 2019 per the United States Census Bureau. This makes Mount Airy one of the smallest cities in the state, which is not necessarily a good thing. Rural areas have become overrun with drug use since America’s drug epidemic began in the early 2000s, rivaling some of the biggest drug problems in major metropolitan areas when it comes to rates of drug addiction and overdose. In 2019 there were 30.2 drug deaths for every 100,000 residents of the state according to America’s Health Rankings. This rate is much higher than the national average was for that same year, showing how concentrated the issue is in Maryland. Each of these people needed help from drug and alcohol rehabilitation and detox services to save their lives. But many of these people simply would not have accepted help even if it was offered. This is why treatment centers and rehabs cannot be the only ones to blame for why we lose so many people to addiction every year. Society needs to step up and develop a less passive attitude. Ignore “advice” telling you to wait until the person is ready, and that you cannot help them until they are. This is false. You can save someone’s life by intervening and helping them when they cannot help themselves.
