Nelson County's county seat is Lovingston, and substance abuse has impacted their community importantly. This is not something that should ever be underestimated, because it can cause a great deal of damage, so it is essential to take such an issue very seriously. The following statistics will show us just how much drug and alcohol abuse has affected the county. Firstly, there is excessive drinking, which combines binge and heavy drinking, which was reported by 16% of adults in Nelson County in 2017, according to County Health Rankings. Alcohol abuse has also caused many casualties in the county, with 9 alcohol-impaired driving deaths, and this accounts for 38% of all driving deaths for those same years. Additionally, overdoses have led to lots of fatalities in the last years, with a drug poisoning mortality rate of 10 deaths per 100,000 population for 2016-2018. Substance abuse has touched a majority of the nation's population, and in fact, even some younger people struggle with it. A lot of adolescents are put under a lot of pressure to perform at school and can sometimes also have struggles at home. This might lead to drug and/or alcohol abuse, and this can happen with pressure from their friends or because they think it will solve their problems. Truth is, it is only a temporary solution and it may cause a lot of harm, especially with youth, as their brain has not fully developed yet. There are treatment programs for youth available, and they can be quite beneficial in helping them overcome their addiction. This program will assist them in finding alternate solutions to dealing with their different life problems that do not involve abusing any drug. Recovering from an addiction is never easy, but with the help of proper treatment, it is definitely possible.
