GET A CALL BACK

New Jersey, being that it’s on the East Coast, suffers from a lot of the same drug and alcohol abuse issues that are classic and stereotypical of the East Coast. In recent years, the entire Eastern Seaboard has been hit with a pretty concerning and worrisome heroin addiction issue. Opiates, in general, have been a problem in this side of the country, and in the last ten years, heroin has really made a comeback. The best way to handle any type of drug or alcohol addiction problem is with a residential drug and alcohol addiction treatment center and a drug detox facility. These centers and programs deliver good services that actually help their clients really address and get down to the bottom of their issues and crisis problems.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse in New Jersey Counties

There are many issues related to substance abuse in the state of New Jersey, but we will be focusing on alcohol abuse, more specifically excessive drinking. We will look at the counties that have the highest percentage of reported excessive drinkers. The first two counties we will be going over are Hunterdon and Sussex County, as they both had 22% of the adult population who reported heavy or binge drinking in 2017. And then, there are Gloucester and Monmouth counties that have 21% of adults that reported excessive drinking for that year. This type of statistic is always approximated because it is impossible to know of those who were not honest about their drinking habits, but it does give us a good idea. Now, for individuals who have an addiction to alcohol and are struggling, there are treatment programs made specifically for alcohol abuse. Normally, it begins with alcohol detox, where the individual can get rid of the physical withdrawal symptoms safely while under medical supervision. Once that is done, they can go through a treatment program that will be made specifically to address their alcohol addiction, so they can lead a substance-free life.

New Jersey’s Prevention of Substance Abuse

One thing that is of utmost importance is substance abuse prevention because it helps stop the addiction or abuse before it happens. For instance, the DART Prevention Coalition has been serving Ocean County for 10 years now, and they have worked very hard to help prevent the use and misuse of different substances by its youth. There is also the Bergen County Prevention Coalition (BCPC), and their work focuses on the same issues, as they wish to create a safe and drug-free Bergen County for its youth and young adults. Next, there is the Prevention Coalition of Mercer County, and it is comprised of community members who wish to make the prevention of alcohol and other drugs a priority. Finally, the New Jersey State Police has a Canine Unit, and it helps with the enforcement of substance abuse laws, as the canines can detect illicit narcotics with their enhanced sense of smell. Altogether, these organizations help make the state of New Jersey safer without all the negative effects brought on by the abuse of drugs and alcohol.
