New York UnitedHealthcare Insurance and Substance Abuse Treatment

Through UnitedHealthcare, there are six health plans available to New Yorkers. There is one Dual Eligible Plan for persons with special needs who have Medicare Parts A and B and Medicaid. It provides the same Medicare and Medicaid benefits and extra benefits with hospitals and doctors. There are also three Medicaid plans offered, which is the New York State Medicaid Managed Care Plan. This plan is for New York residents who meet the income or disability requirement. United Healthcare offers one Child Health Plus plan for children up to the age of 19. Someone who applies for this plan must be a resident of New York and not eligible for Medicaid. Finally, there is one Marketplace plan offered through UnitedHealthcare. This plan is for lower-income individuals who meet the income citizenship status requirements.

Within most of the UnitedHealthcare plans is coverage for substance abuse treatment. However, the level of coverage is determined by the type of plan. According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), in 2018, approximately 9.4% of all Americans of all ages were uninsured. Among adults aged 18 to 64, roughly 13.3% were uninsured, and 19% had public insurance, while approximately 68% had private insurance. In 2018 among children aged 0 to 17, about 5.2% were uninsured and 41% had public insurance, whereas 54% had private insurance coverage. Health insurance is essential to have, and it does cover some or all the cost of substance abuse treatment.
