Newport News has definitely been struggling with the different issues that are associated with alcohol and other drug abuse. The proof of their presence lies in the damage they have caused, which we will show with statistics later on. After going through a detox that normally starts the process of drug rehab treatment in Newport News, there are many types of programs to attend for substance abuse problems, and one of them is outpatient treatment. This can be extremely beneficial and accommodating, as it allows for the individual to live at home while doing the treatment. This gives them a shot at a full recovery but also makes it so they can fulfill the different responsibilities they may have in their life, whether it be family, work, etc. Now, in Newport News, the opioid epidemic has taken many lives, in fact, they were 26 deaths caused by opioid overdoses in 2017, with 23 involving prescription opioids, and 20 involving fentanyl and other synthetic opioids (excluding methadone). So, drugs did cause a lot of damage to the community, and it involves many drugs and not one specific drug only. Newport News’ Prevention Efforts for Substance Abuse

Within Newport News, the Police Department works extremely hard to reduce and prevent substance abuse in the community. For instance, there is the Narcotics Enforcement Unit, and their goal is to enforce the substance abuse laws in areas that have been prone to drug and violence issues. They also have a number that citizens can call to report suspected drug activity to the Unit anonymously. Then, there is the Special Investigations Section whose mission is to conduct long-term investigations regarding narcotics and weapons violations, while working with other agencies, including the FBI and the DEA. Finally, there is the K-9 Unit, and the teams assigned to it receive regular specialized training to assist in tracking suspects, illegal drug detection, etc. Law enforcement members are very helpful in the substance abuse field, but sometimes, they may be struggling with addiction themselves, as they deal with highly stressful situations every day. There are many substance abuse treatment programs in Newport News for law enforcement that can help them find ways to handle these issues without abusing alcohol and/or drugs, so they can keep protecting their community while being drug-free.
