The village of Northport is a historic maritime village located on the north shore of Long Island. The population is estimated at over 7,400 residents and approximately 4% are living below the poverty line with a median age of 48 years old. In a document titled The Staggering Cost of Long Islands Opioid Crisis by the Fiscal Policy Institute, in 2017, 3,244 deaths were resulting from opioid overdose within New York State. From 2013 this was a 93% increase and opioids were involved in 80% of all overdose deaths in 2017. Within the state, it was a rate of 16.2 deaths per 100,000 population. New York State, when compared to the rest of the county, it ranked 20th for opioid-related overdose deaths, in 2016 and 2017. The opioid problems that are seen throughout the state affect small communities such as Northport. Nassau and Suffolk County within Long Island had some of the highest rates of opioid-related overdose deaths. Suffolk County had the second-highest rate, and Nassau County had the 18th highest rate of overdose deaths. However, the opioid death rate in Nassau County was 30% lower than the county average, and the average in Suffolk County was 41% higher than the state average. Drug and alcohol treatment resources within Long Island include both inpatient and outpatient resources. There are also suitable medical detox programs and withdrawal management services to help addicts struggling with this dangerous addiction.
