Drug Treatment Facilities in Northumberland County, Virginia

Last updated: Tuesday, 09, November 2021

Northumberland County's county seat is the city of Heathsville, and together they have been struggling with substance abuse for a long time and have suffered the consequences that come with such a problem. The statistics we will be looking at will be from recent years and will focus on the damage caused by alcohol abuse. Firstly, there is alcohol-impaired driving that caused one death between 2014-2018, which might seem like a low statistic, but actually, even one substance abuse-related death is one too many. Excessive drinking may have contributed to this fatality because it is known to impair one's judgment and their ability to make good decisions. Well, County Health Rankings found that in 2017, 14% of Northumberland County's adult population reported either binge or heavy drinking. Other health problems that excessive drinking can lead to include an increased risk of stroke, malnutrition, high blood pressure, and lung inflammation or infection. This is a very serious problem and it should be addressed accordingly, which means those struggling with an addiction to alcohol and/or drugs should seek treatment. For certain people, there might be barriers in their way when trying to find an appropriate treatment. For instance, a Spanish-speaking person whose English isn't very fluent may feel reluctant in attending just any program, fearing they might not be fully understood. Thankfully, there are treatment programs with Spanish-speaking staff that can serve those who feel more comfortable communicating in this language. Language should not be something that prevents someone from overcoming their substance abuse problems, and such programs help ensure this.
