Substance Abuse and Addiction in Oakland, Alameda County, California

Oakland is a major west coast port city and the county seat for Alameda County. Oakland is the largest city in the East Bay area, which is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Many of the substance abuse issues facing Oakland have flooded over from cities such as San Francisco. Historically the city of Oakland had a staggering crime rate, and much has been done to reduce this. The primary factor in the increase in crime has been the increase in narcotic drug abuse and sales since the 1970s. Oakland became a major west coast hub for heroin and cocaine distribution. The city of Oakland is the second city in the nation to decriminalize psilocybin mushrooms; however, these drugs are still legal under federal and state law.

The on-going opioid epidemic also impacted Alameda County, and in 2016 approximately 5.6% of the population aged 12 and older misused opioids, per the California County Spotlight. During 2016 there were 47 opioid-related deaths within the county, and one percent of people who misused opioids were addicted to them. Like the rest of California, the county has pushed for more medication-assisted treatment options for those struggling with opioid abuse. Adolescent drug abuse in the county has been a continuing issue, especially marijuana abuse. According to Alameda County Behavioral Health, in Alameda County, approximately 80% of youth who attend public treatment programs reported marijuana as their primary drug of choice.
