Olean is a city in Cattaraugus County and is the largest city in the county, serving as the financial, business, entertainment, and transportation center of the county. The population of the city is over 14,000 and the median age is 40, with a rate of poverty of around 22%. The primary industry in the city is health care, education, manufacturing, and real estate. The county of Cattaraugus in the western part of the state bordering Pennsylvania and the population of the county is estimated at around 80,000 people. According to a 2019-2021 Community Needs Assessment and Community Health Improvement Plan (CHA-CHIP), the age-adjusted suicide death rate per 100,000 county residents has worsened since 2007. The goal was to reduce the number of heroin-related incidents within the county and its cities. In 2017 in the county, there were 10.3 opioid-related deaths per 100,000 population within the county.
