Orchard Park is a town situated in Erie County and is a suburb located in the southeast portion of Buffalo. The population of Orchard Park is estimated at over 3,000 people with a median age of about 43 years old and a rate of poverty of around 1%. Substance abuse problems that impact Orchard are part of those that are prevalent throughout the city of Buffalo. According to an Erie County New York Community Health Assessment (CHA), 2017 to 2019, approximately 15% of residents are living below the poverty line, which is similar to New York State. Poverty is a strong motivator for people to become addicted to drugs or alcohol, and often the addiction has led to hardship. The city of Buffalo has a rate of poverty of around 30%, and 17% of families with children in Erie County live below the poverty line. Opioid addiction in Erie County is a significant problem, much like the rest of the state. The issues have stemmed from both prescription pain medication and heroin. For example, in 2014, there was a sharp increase in the number of opioid-related deaths in Erie County, and 127 were connected to opioids. In 2015 the number of fatalities doubled to 256, and in 2016 there were 223 deaths, many of which were caused by fentanyl. Substance abuse requires extensive treatment and care, and opioid addiction needs withdrawal management and medical detox. Lengthier treatment is the better option because of the high rate of relapse among opioid addicts. When searching for a drug treatment program within the county, there are public and private rehabilitation options to choose from.
