Orleans County’s Youth Substance Abuse

The abuse of alcohol and drugs is always bad, no matter who suffers from it, but when we see our youth misusing either substance, it is truly distressing. These are young people whose brains have not fully finished developing, and they are using substances that can permanently harm them. And the worst part is they can get it from pretty much anywhere. As for alcohol, a survey was done in 2017 that asked youth where they drank their alcohol in the past 30 days. 54% said they drank it with a parent’s permission at home, 20% said they drank it in a car and 21% said they drank it at a park. Another place where youth can get their alcohol is at their parties, where, unfortunately, when there is no parent supervision, these young people can drink and take whatever substance they can get their hands on. In 2017, 65% of youth surveyed said they got their alcohol from a party they went to. So, we can definitely see that our youth can get their drugs or alcohol from many places and in several situations.
