What are the signs of Over the counter drugs addiction?

When misused and abused, over the counter drugs can be addictive and life-threatening. Using quantities higher than those prescribed can lead to signs, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Slurred speech
  • Seizures

There are numerous adverse side effects from over the counter drugs when they are abused. Some of the side effects from over using cough medicine includes hallucinations, slurred speech, seizures, and vomiting. Other commonly abused over the counter drugs in Puerto Rico include cough medicine and pain relievers. The drug ephedrine was once used in most diet pills and was banned by the FDA in 2004 because of how addictive it is. The drug rehabilitation process offered within the centers across Puerto Rico is no different than anywhere else. Addicts who may be abusing over the counter drugs with other substances will of course have to go through detox, but also receive some type of formal therapy. This can be done within either an outpatient center or an inpatient drug treatment program. Some drug treatment centers offer long-term care while others will provide short term help.
