The state suffers from cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, prescription drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and addiction, marijuana, crack cocaine, and hallucinogens just to name a few. The state recently broke records in the nation for having one of the highest per-capita drug abuse issues amongst a person’s age fifteen to twenty-five. Within the different Pennsylvania counties, a problem that is definitely present is alcohol-impaired driving. In the past years, the number of deaths it has caused cannot be overlooked. In fact, between 2014 and 2018, the county with the most deaths caused by this was Philadelphia County, with 89 deaths. This accounts for 18% of all driving deaths for this same period. The next one would be Bucks County, with 79 deaths that are equal to 31% of driving deaths in those years. Finally, the third-highest number of deaths would be Allegheny County with 78 deaths caused by alcohol-impaired driving. Now, when someone is struggling with alcohol addiction, the best solution if they want to recover is to seek help from an alcohol treatment program. Usually, it will begin with a detox process, so they can get the physical symptoms out of the way and do it safely under medical supervision. After the detox, they are then ready to attend a treatment program where they can address find tools on how to deal with the issues that brought them to abuse alcohol in the first place, so as to stay away from any potential triggers.

Pennsylvania’s Services for Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment

Prevention is a very good and useful thing when it comes to stopping addiction and abuse before it happens. In Pennsylvania, there are lots of organizations that offer prevention services to the community. First, there is the Cambria County Drug Coalition whose focus is to create positive change and a drug-free community in the area of Cambria County. On their website, they show what they wish to accomplish in different sectors, such as law enforcement, prevention & education of the community, etc. Then, there is the South Central PA Opioid Awareness Coalition, who wishes to bring together all professionals who are allowed to prescribe medications, so together they can address the ongoing issues related to the opioid epidemic, and to do so by educating people and making them more aware of the problem. Another coalition that wishes to educate the public on substance abuse prevention is the Drug and Alcohol Service Providers Organization of Pennsylvania, and they also want to help make treatment services as effective as possible within the state of Pennsylvania. These services along with the different treatment programs available in the area, such as outpatient treatment, inpatient programs, detox services, etc., are contributing to make Pennsylvania a better and drug-free state.
