Pinal County is located in the central portion of the state of Arizona. Home to over 460,000 people as of the 2010 US Census, Pinal County is the third-largest county in Arizona. But being a densely populated area can definitely have its drawbacks, including increased rates of substance abuse and addiction. This is definitely the case in Pinal County, where from 2015 to 2017, there were 175 drug overdose deaths according to a report published by County Health Rankings and Roadmaps. As America's drug epidemic has grown worse, areas like Pinal County have seen an increasing need for drug and alcohol rehabilitation services. Often, communities can't keep up with the demand for treatment services needs, and people have to go outside of their county or even state to find help.

One of the largest contributors to high overdose death rates is opioids. These drugs have been ravaging America since the new millennium, killing people in unprecedented numbers. Any people who become addicted to opioids began with a legitimate prescription. One of the only effective known remedies for severe pain, opioids have become overused in a culture that is unwilling to tolerate even minor discomforts. As a result, many people have unwittingly become addicted to prescription painkillers, even when taking them as prescribed. Opioids work very well for their indicated purpose, so a person with an injury or chronic pain usually finds them to be very helpful at first. But very quickly they start not working as well, as the body adjusts its chemistry to compensate for being saturated in opioids. Now, the person will have more pain when not taking opioids than before they got the prescription. And when they do take them, they don't work as well unless the person takes a larger dose. This cycle worsens to the point where the person must either quit opioids and endure excruciating withdrawal symptoms for several days or even weeks or begin seeking them illegally. This catch-22 leaves the person feeling trapped, with the easiest option being to continue taking drugs.

Thankfully, treatment options such as medical detoxification exist to help people get off drugs like opioids. Medical detox programs utilize specialized medications that are chemically similar to the drug the person was abusing. These medications are usually safer and produce less enjoyable effects, making it easier for a person to be tapered off them over the course of several days. This gradual process is done under medical supervision and in conjunction with other therapeutic interventions and medications. Ultimately, the person becomes completely drug-free by the end of the process and this is achieved much more smoothly than by attempting to do it on one's own or in a facility that doesn't offer medical detoxification services.

Some drugs may not even be safe to quit on your own. Alcohol and many tranquilizers like benzodiazepines can have dangerous withdrawal symptoms like seizures which can kill. This is why it's important to always consult with an addiction treatment professional or doctor before making any changes in your usual dose of such medications. You may need to utilize medical detox to safely become drug-free.
