The information mentioned above is very alarming, which is why it is important to have prevention services in place to help reduce the damage caused by substance abuse. In Plymouth County, the Sheriff's Department provides inmate programs both while the inmates are serving their sentence and when they are close to being released. One of the services an inmate may need to receive to help them reintegrate the community is substance abuse treatment, as this is often an issue that lands people into jail in the first place. The Department also has its own K-9 Unit and has its teams trained to assist in tasks such as narcotics detection, patrol, and the canines help save lots of man-hours with their enhanced sense of smell. Then, there is the Plymouth County Drug Task Force that was put in place by the Sheriff's Department in collaboration with the District Attorney's Office. They want to help reduce narcotic abuse in the county and they work together with different community members to do so. To help specifically prevent prescription drug abuse, the Task Force has a Prescription Medication Disposal Program, to help people safely dispose of unused or expired medications at different locations in the county. These programs and services are very useful in creating a safe and drug-free environment within Plymouth County.
