Methadone is a synthetic opioid and is typically used to treat opiate addiction and or manage pain. Methadone works on pain receptors the same way as other opiates and reduces how much pain you feel. The drug is used to replace another opioid drug that a person is addicted to. However, the sustained and long-term use of methadone does lead to dependence and addiction. Long-term use of methadone creates a tolerance, which then causes dangerous withdrawal symptoms. Programs for methadone detox in Florida are practical solutions to mitigate withdrawal symptoms. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, methadone was responsible for one in three pain medication deaths in 2009.

Additionally, about 5,000 people die every year of overdoses related to methadone, and six times as many people died of methadone overdoses in 2009 than a decade before. According to a Florida Health Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Annual Report, the prescription drug monitoring program has caused a 13.6% decrease in the number of schedule II through IV opioid prescriptions dispensed to patients. Also, it has resulted in a 53% decrease in the average daily morphine milligram equivalents per prescription. Between 2017 and 2018, within the state of Florida, overdose deaths involving prescription opioids decreased. The mortality rate of the most frequently prescribed opioids also decreased. The most commonly used opioids are oxycodone and hydrocodone. During that time, there was a 13.6% decline in the number of deaths.

Unfortunately, despite these declines, many opiate addicts turn to methadone as a way of treating their addiction. Methadone use does lead to addiction and dependence, which then requires medically supervised detox or medication-assisted treatment. When searching for treatment programs in the state, detox is the first step. Detox alone does not guarantee sobriety because there is no effective counseling provided. Counseling and therapy are essential, and this should be done regardless if there was a severe addiction or not. The therapy process addresses the underlying issues of addiction and provides the recovering addict the coping skills he or she needs to manage their new life.

What is Methadone?

Methadone is an opioid medication that is generally used to reduce the withdrawal symptoms of heroin and other narcotic drugs. It is prescribed by doctors as a pain reliever and is often abused, which leads to severe addiction to the drug.
