Commonly Abused Illicit Drugs in California

It is estimated that in the state of California, three million people abuse illegal drugs, and unfortunately, the abuse of drugs is still the leading cause of death within the state. The vast majority of arrests and crimes committed in California is because of illegal drugs. The state of California currently has the largest market for medical marijuana, and every year; thousands of pounds of illegal drugs are seized within the state. The commonly abused drugs in California include marijuana, methamphetamines, heroin, ecstasy, and cocaine. Unfortunately, within the state of California, most addicts will never receive the treatment they need for their addictions, despite, there being hundreds of different drug rehabilitation options throughout the state. Access to the correct drug rehabilitation can be difficult, there are both private and subsidized drug treatment services throughout California. Drug and alcohol addiction can spiral out of control without the appropriate help, and addicts can access all different types of detox programs, inpatient centers, and outpatient rehabilitation programs in California.

Types of Drug Use in California

The state of California has a large and diverse population of people, and many types of illicit drugs are abused. Most drug addiction involves more than one type of drug, and it is common for addicts to use multiple drugs during their addiction. Most drug problems start for a specific reason, such as recreational drug use, coping with stress, and dealing with physical or emotional pain, as an example. Within the state of California marijuana was the most commonly used illicit drug among all age groups. In 2018, recreational marijuana became legal in the state for anyone over the age of 21. Young adults had the highest rates of marijuana use in the state during the past year, per the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) 2018 report.

Among adolescents aged 12 to 17, roughly 13% were using marijuana, while 34% of young adults were using it, and 13% of adults aged 26 or older had used marijuana. Pain medication is the next most commonly abused drug in the state, and 3.5% of adolescents were misusing pain medication. Among adults, around 8% had misused pain medication in the past year, and 4.3% of adults abuse pain killers. Cocaine abuse in California is prevalent among young adults with 7.2% using cocaine in the past year, while 0.8% of teens and 1.8% of adults were abusing cocaine. A small percentage of the population in California is abusing heroin, and young adults make up the most significant percentage with 0.4%, and 0.2% of adults were using heroin, while no percentage of adolescents was recorded.
