Frequently Asked Questions

Should you seek treatment in St. Louis County, or look further away?

One thing in St. Louis County is dangerous to get wrong. Some local programs offer monitoring without medication for withdrawal. For alcohol or benzodiazepines that is not enough, those two can cause seizures and need real medical management. The nearest hospital-based medical care is across the river in Alton, Illinois, about twenty-four miles. If you have a heavy alcohol or benzo history, do not walk into a monitoring-only setting. Confirm the level of care first and go medical. What the county has locally is free long-term faith-based programs combining work therapy and twelve-step, with more about thirteen miles south, running several months to a year. That length is a real strength. Name your drug honestly first, because for alcohol or benzos a social-detox bed is the wrong room to be in. Once you are safely through the withdrawal, those year-long programs are where the real change happens. A bed a few miles out of your own neighborhood is better for you than one on your old block.
