Frequently Asked Questions

Should you seek treatment in Multnomah County, or look further away?

Multnomah County is the regional hub and has the widest range around, every level of care, and culturally specific programs built around particular communities, with peer support. That cultural fit matters, because people stay engaged when the care understands who they are. One practical note. Local programs do not provide standalone medical withdrawal care, so for alcohol or benzos a local hospital handles withdrawal first, since those are dangerous to stop alone. I will add the big-city caution too. This county has a heavy, visible drug scene, and a long-term program is not a locked facility. If your using life runs through this city, think about whether some distance would help. Use the range and the cultural fit here and handle the withdrawal at the hospital. But if your whole using life runs through the heart of this city, getting clean right in the middle of that scene is the hardest way to do it. Sometimes a bed outside the city is the better choice.
