The Opioid Epidemic in Richmond County, NY

The opioid crisis is prevalent everywhere throughout the state of New York, but Richmond County is where it's at its worst, especially in Staten Island. In 2018, the county had 314 visits to emergency departments and 145 hospitalizations for opioid overdoses, all per 100 000 population. And, in that same year, there were 433 doses of Naloxone administered either by Emergency Medical Services or registered Community Opioid Outreach Programs (COOP) in the county. Naloxone is used to reverse an opioid overdose. These are all very alarming statistics and they are much higher than most counties in the state of New York.

Anti-Drug Initiatives of Richmond County's District Attorney

The Office of the District Attorney of Richmond County takes great measures to help fight against substance abuse and addiction. They have several anti-drug initiatives in place to do so. First, there is the Overdose Response Initiative, which was implemented in collaboration with the NYPD to address Staten Island's drug crisis by taking deaths caused by an overdose and investigating them as if they were a crime scene, so they can root out drug dealers. Their efforts have led to the arrest of many drug dealers. They also provide a hotline for residents to anonymously report illegal narcotics. The DA's office also has the Heroin Overdose Prevention and Education (HOPE) Initiative, which is used to direct low-level drug offenders toward treatment services and community-based health services, instead of simply prosecuting them and putting them in jail. And, there is the Staten Island Drug Treatment Court, whose goal is to rehabilitate those with substance abuse offenses, to help break the cycle of addiction, and improve the quality of life in Staten Island. They also have many other programs to fight against drunk driving and school-based prevention programs.

Richmond County's Substance Abuse Prevention Programs

In addition to the DA's many prevention programs, there are others throughout Richmond County. For example, there is SIHOPE.org, which is a public awareness campaign, to help those who need it for addiction problems, and for those who simply wish to get involved and help in this crisis. There is also the Staten Island Drug Prevention Portal, which lists the many initiatives that help fight and prevent drug addiction, such as a community education campaign, tips on responsible prescribing, school-based prevention programs, take-back programs, which set specific locations where people can drop off their unused or expired medications, and harm reduction programs. In order to appropriately fight the monster that is an addiction, we need the help and power of all these programs.
