Roanoke County is a county that can be found in the state of Virginia. Home to a population that is estimated to be around 94,000 people as of 2019 according to the US Census Bureau, Roanoke County is one of the larger counties in the state by population. But one drawback to being densely populated is the risk of increased rates of drug addiction and overdose, something that has been a problem for most states and counties since America’s drug epidemic began in the early 2000s. According to County Health Rankings, from 2015 to 2017 there were 54 drug deaths in Roanoke County, a total that shows the sad truth of just a portion of the victims of addiction. Every drug death could have been avoided if the person had gotten proper treatment from drug and alcohol rehabilitation and detox services. But many of these people had never seen the inside of a treatment center despite dying from addiction. So, we cannot blame America’s rehabilitation system without also looking at why we are not helping these people get into treatment before it is too late. We can each do our part by dispelling some of the common myths that have been pervasive in the industry for a long time. Never wait for a person to be “ready” if you know they are using drugs. Every day is roulette and they can easily die before ever being ready. Act before it is too late. No one wants to regret no doing everything possible to save a life.
