Drug and alcohol abuse have been affecting Russell County for many years now, and this includes its county seat, Lebanon. Substance abuse being so present throughout the nation, it has definitely caused a great deal of damage. This is not something that should be overlooked, because the amount of harm it can lead to can be devastating to a community. We will go over some statistics that will give us an idea of the presence of substance abuse in the county. Firstly, there is excessive drinking that was reported by 16% of adults in the county, and this drinking pattern includes both binge and heavy drinking. It can severely impair a person’s judgment as well as their ability to make good decisions, and this can, in some cases, cause death. In fact, alcohol-impaired driving led to 6 fatalities between 2014-2018, which accounts for 23% of the driving deaths for this same period, according to County Health Rankings. Finally, we have drug poisoning that also caused casualties in Russell County, with a drug overdose mortality rate of 14 deaths per 100,000 population. Alcohol and drug addiction can touch anyone, and a good example of that is college students. Some of them can feel a lot of pressure to perform well in their studies and might feel the need to take drugs to help them with that. For others, it’s simply their first experience away from home, where they’re free to do what they want, including partying, drinking and consuming drugs. This can escalate quickly and lead to devastating consequences. There are treatment programs for college students that can help them overcome their substance abuse issues. Such a program will be able to help identify the root causes for their addiction so that they can pinpoint what needs to be addressed, so as to give them their best chance at making a full recovery.
