DRS recommends a well-rounded rehabilitation approach involving detox, residential treatment, and aftercare. However, every addiction is entirely different from the next. Texas Medicaid and private health insurance do cover some substance use treatment.

Over 15 drug rehab centers in San Antonio take Medicaid, and over 15 accept private health insurance. Contact one of our addictions professionals for more information, or consult our extensive directory listing. We offer information about addiction treatment services in the city and state.

TIPS: If you feel you're going to use

  • Find a peer support group: Texas 12-step meetings and aftercare programs from the DRS directory.
  • Stay active and distracted—take long or short walks, join a gym, or frequent the local community center.
  • Utilize free or open behavioral health counseling or contact 2-1-1 Texas.
  • Find an extroverted activity—experience the beaches, arts and culture, history, sports, shopping, or outdoor adventures.
  • Avoid risky situations that lead to relapse. Be aware of stressful and overwhelming situations.

TIPS: If you want to help someone

  • Refer them to local resources through DRS or Texas Health and Human Services.
  • Be aware of overdose risks—resources available through Texas Health and Human Services and Overdose Prevention Strategies.
  • Assessment and screening are vital tools. These resources are available at state and local levels.
  • Consider hiring a professional interventionist and plan a family intervention.
  • Avoid enabling anyone addicted to drugs or alcohol as it worsens the situation.

Long-Term Drug Rehab in San Antonio

The professional opinion of DRS is that long-term treatment drug and alcohol rehab has proven to be the most effective for achieving life-long sobriety—here are some reasons why:

  • You have tried outpatient or short-term drug rehab in San Antonio, and long-term residential is a better fit.
  • Addressing underlying issues takes time. Long-term programs last 60 to 90 days or longer, and more is done to address trauma.
  • The mind and body need time to heal. Lengthier treatment within a residential setting offers more opportunities for healing.

According to SAMHSA and N-SSATS:

Approximately 19% of all residential drug and alcohol rehab centers in Texas are long-term residential. Within the San Antonio recovery center, there are only five long-term residential substance use treatment centers. Below is a breakdown of what is available to specific demographics:

Long-Term Drug Treatment Options for Specific Demographics:

  • Three long-term programs in San Antonio work with adult women.
  • Three facilities provide services specifically for men.
  • There are no long-term programs for adolescents.
  • Two programs are tailored for seniors and older adults.
  • Two treatment centers tailor programs for LGBTQ.
  • One long-term program provides help to pregnant and postpartum women.

Payment Options for Long-Term Drug Rehab:

  • Two long-term programs accept Medicaid.
  • Four treatment options take private health insurance.
  • Four long-term programs are private pay or self-payment.
  • No facilities offer a sliding fee scale for payment.

Overall, there is limited selection for long-term substance use treatment in San Antonio, TX. DRS recommends considering other locations in Texas. It is best to look at more than one city or even another state if possible.

Cost of Treatment in San Antonio, Texas

The cost of substance use treatment in San Antonio varies and depends on several factors. Initially, the cost of treatment changes when Medicaid or private health insurance is used to pay for rehabilitation. In addition, the program length changes the cost. Residential and outpatient drug rehab is different in cost, and specific amenities change the price of treatment.

Paying for Treatment with Medicaid in San Antonio

Texas Medicaid covers drug and alcohol rehabilitation in San Antonio. Medicaid is designed to help families and persons from low-income households. Generally, when you enroll in a drug rehab center, Medicaid pays the facility directly.

Using Private Insurance to pay for Drug Rehab in San Antonio

Private health insurance is another option to consider. The extent of coverage depends on the health plan type. Private health plans generally cover residential, outpatient, and detox programs.

Texas utilizes the federally run marketplace and has one of the highest exchange enrollments in the country. Most individuals with private health insurance have coverage through an employer. It is best to contact your health insurance provider or the drug rehab center directly.

The following insurers offer marketplace coverage in Texas:

  • Aetna CVS Health
  • Celtic/Ambetter (Ambetter from Superior Health Plan)
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas
  • Bright Healthcare
  • CHRISTUS
  • Friday Health Plan
  • Moda Health Plan
  • Molina
  • Oscar
  • Sendero
  • SHA/FirstCare
  • Community Health Choice
  • Scott & White Health Plan
  • UnitedHealthcare of Texas

Paying for treatment when uninsured

Paying for drug and alcohol rehab without health insurance is not easy. However, it is not uncommon for some treatment centers to provide payment plans or sliding fee scales. There are different options to explore.

For more information on paying for treatment, contact one of our qualified addictions professionals for more information, or contact the drug rehab center directly.

DRS’ Evaluation of San Antonio, Texas

After reviewing state statistics and options available for Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation in San Antonio, DRS discovered the following pros and cons:

Pros

  • There are nine drug and alcohol detox centers capable of providing withdrawal management.
  • There are 21 outpatient substance use treatment programs, which is an excellent option for individuals refusing inpatient care.
  • Private health insurance is accepted at over half of the drug rehab centers in the city.

Cons

  • The ACA would have expanded Medicaid to cover all legal residents in Texas with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty level, but a Supreme Court ruling in 2012 allowed states to opt out of Medicaid expansion. Texas has not allowed for Medicaid expansion.
  • Medicaid eligibility rules in Texas are particularly strict: Non-disabled adults without dependent children are ineligible regardless of income, and parents with dependent children are only eligible if their household income doesn’t exceed 15% of poverty.
  • Only one-quarter of the drug rehab centers in San Antonio offer residential treatment.
  • There are only two locations for transitional housing, halfway houses and sober living homes.

There are more options to consider in the other cities within Texas. However, there are accessible treatment options in San Antonino. Affordability of care may become a barrier for some individuals and families.

He spent his career working under the board-certified Addictionologist Dr. Rohit Adi. His experience includes working with families during their loved one’s stay in treatment, helping those with substance abuse issues find treatment, and teaching life skills to patients in a recovery atmosphere. Though he has worked in many different areas of rehabilitation, the majority of his time was spent working one on one with patients who were actively withdrawing from drugs. Withdrawal and the fear of going through it is one biggest reason why an addict continues to use and can be the most difficult part of the rehabilitation process. His experience in the withdrawal atmosphere has taught him that regardless of what approach a person takes to get off drugs, there are always mental and emotional obstacles that need to be overcome. He believes having someone there to help a person through these obstacles can make all the difference during the withdrawal process.
