The problems relating to substance abuse that are faced by Saratoga County residents are very concerning. First, there is the issue of the opioid epidemic. It has brought a lot of harm to the county, which can be confirmed with the following statistics. In 2018 only, there were 56 emergency department visits, 12 hospitalizations and 22 deaths caused by opioid overdoses per 100 000 population. Then, there is alcohol abuse, which has also caused a lot of deaths. Between 2013 and 2017, there were 24 alcohol-impaired driving deaths, and this number amounts to 29% of all driving deaths within these years, per County Health Rankings. And finally, we all know that drug abuse can cause overdoses, but it is also common that an overdose can lead to death if it is not attended to rapidly or appropriately. In the county, there have been 55 drug overdoses that caused death per 100 000 population between 2015 and 2017.

We’ve seen that the substance abuse scene in Saratoga County is very distressing, but thankfully, the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Council of Saratoga County is dedicated to the prevention of alcohol & drug abuse, especially in our youth. It is a non-profit organization that works directly with youth to provide them with the skills and tools so they can make the right decisions and live a healthy life. They provide prevention programs throughout schools, from kindergarten through 12th grade. All of their programs are aimed at helping the students learn how to resist peer pressure and giving them the consequences of using tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, etc., so they can make informed choices.
