Schenectady County’s problem with substance abuse and addiction is not something that can be overlooked. It’s an issue that has created a lot of harm in the county. It includes drug and alcohol abuse as a whole, and also more specifically the opioid epidemic. But, Schenectady County does have many programs and services to either prevent substance abuse before it happens or to provide substance abuse treatment to those who are already suffering from addiction and need help.

Substance abuse is a highly distressing issue in Schenectady County. And, unfortunately, when someone abuses drugs recklessly, what can happen is that it can cause an overdose. And if an overdose is too severe and is not cared for immediately and appropriately, they may sadly cause death. And, in Schenectady County, there have been many lives lost to addiction. According to County Health Rankings, between 2015 and 2017, there were 91 deaths caused by drug overdoses in the county. And, as well as drug abuse in general, the county has been ravaged by the opioid epidemic for a while now. Just in 2018, there were 59 emergency department visits and 18 hospitalizations due to opioid overdoses, and there were unfortunately 22 deaths caused by an opioid overdose, all of these per 100 000 population. These statistics are very alarming and help must be given to those who need it.

Schenectady County Substance Abuse Prevention Programs

One of the most important parts of fighting substance abuse is providing prevention programs within the community, to stop abuse and addiction in its tracks before it even happens. Schenectady County does have these programs, and they have brought great help. For example, there is the Schenectady County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, which helps with substance abuse prevention and promotes health throughout the community. They provide treatment resources for those who need help with addiction and also tips on how to start a conversation with children about substance abuse. Schenectady County also provides the Prescription Drug Disposal Program, which allows residents of the county to drop off their unused or expired medications at specific locations, so those do not end up in the wrong hands and cause any harm.

STOP-DWI Program in Schenectady County, NY

Another program in Schenectady County that helps in the fight against substance abuse is the STOP-DWI program. It was established by New York State legislation and uses fines paid by alcohol and drug-related traffic offenses to fund their programs so that no taxpayer dollar is used. They have many programs to help with the prevention, enforcement, and prosecution of impaired driving and the rehabilitation of those committed of such an offense. They hold Victim Impact Panels, whose objective is to make those committed of impaired driving more aware of the impact it can cause by having presentations made by victims of these incidents. They also provide the Substance Abuse Awareness Program, which is for teens and young adults who have had trouble with the law caused by the abuse of drugs and/or alcohol, to give them tools and skills to prevent further substance abuse.
