The city of Schenectady is located in Schenectady County and is the county seat with a population of over 66,000 people. The median age in the county is 36 years old, and approximately 21% of the county is living below the poverty line. According to a Schenectady County Community Needs Assessment for 2018, the city of Schenectady is the most densely populated municipality in the county. The population of the county at the time of this assessment was over 154,000 people, and approximately 42% of its residents are living in Schenectady. The highest level of poverty within the county is in the city of Schenectady and at the time of this assessment, the rate of poverty was 21.1%. Drug and alcohol abuse and the problems connected to it does impact the people of the county and within the city of Schenectady. According to the New York State Department of Health, the alcohol-related motor vehicle injuries and deaths are currently at 29.5 per 100,000 population. When compared to the Capital Region, this is much lower, and it has significantly improved, and it is around the same number as the state. Additionally, the age-adjusted percentage of adults who are currently binge drinking is 18.3%, which is much of the same with the Capital Region and the state. Per another New York State Department of Health report, in 2018 there were 11 heroin-related overdose deaths and 17 opioid-related deaths involving pain medication.
