Seneca County is most definitely suffering from a problem with alcohol and drug abuse. And, it has harmed many of the county’s residents. The issue mostly includes substance abuse as a whole, and more specifically, opioid abuse and addiction. But, the county is also provided with several programs for either the prevention of drug & alcohol abuse, or drug treatment services for those who are already addicted and need help being free from it.

Substance Abuse in Seneca County, NY

Alcohol and drug abuse are big issues in Seneca County, and unfortunately, when someone misuses drugs, what can happen is what is called an overdose. And, when an overdose is not attended to immediately, they can sometimes even cause death. In Seneca County, there were 11 deaths due to drug overdoses between 2015 and 2017. What’s even more concerning about substance abuse is the opioid epidemic. It is a crisis that is present all throughout the nation, and Seneca County is no exception. Just in 2018, there were 28 emergency departments and 7 hospitalizations due to an opioid overdose. And, sadly, opioid overdoses caused 5 deaths in that same year. All of the statistics relating to opioid overdoses were reported as per 100 000 population.

Seneca County Addictions Program for Seneca County, New York

Seneca County is highly aware of its substance abuse problem, which is why it has implemented an addiction program. Its mission is to collaborate with the community in order to provide comprehensive and appropriate care to individuals struggling with issues relating to alcohol and other substances, as well as their families. The aim of this program is to motivate, educative, encourage and support these people as they learn to cope with challenges regarding their addiction. The services they provide include addiction counseling, services for adolescents and impaired drivers, etc.

Council on Alcoholism and Addictions of The Finger Lakes

The Council on Alcoholism and Addictions (CAA) of The Finger Lakes provides education and prevention services for five of New York’s counties, and the council does it in schools, summer camps, community centers, etc. The use evidence-based programs, such as Too Good for Violence, which aims to promote healthy behaviors in children, and Too Good for Drugs, whose focus is the reduction of risk factors related to the use of alcohol and drugs. They also provide the Guiding Good Choices program, which is for parents, to speak of different topics and give them advice on how to prevent the use of drugs in their family, how to say no to drugs, and helps parents bond with their kids, as we know a strong bond between parents and children can help in the prevention of drugs and alcohol abuse.

Alcohol and Drug Prevention Programs of the Seneca Sheriff’s Office

The Sheriff’s Office of Seneca County takes alcohol and drug abuse prevention to heart. They have a few programs to help fight this issue. First, there is the Fundamentals of Alcohol Intoxication Recognition (FAIR) program, which was implemented to teach those who serve or sell alcohol how to spot intoxicated people, so as to do their job responsibly. They are also taught how to recognize false identifications. The Sheriff’s Office delivers these presentations every year to the food and beverage industry, free of cost. In addition to the FAIR program, they provide the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program in the school districts of the county. It’s taught to 5th graders, and the lessons are focused on giving them the real information on alcohol and drugs, so they can make good decisions, and teaching them how to resist peer pressure.
