Last updated: 21 December 2021

Substance abuse is a problem that has been present in the country in recent years, and it has definitely caused an important of damage in the different communities. Shenandoah County has also been affected by this problem, including its county seat, Woodstock. These next statistics will help us understand how big this problem is and we will also see the help that one can get for such an addiction. Firstly, there is excessive drinking that is quite present in the county, as in 2017, it was reported by nearly one-fifth of adults in the county, 18% to be exact. Alcohol abuse has also sadly caused casualties, more specifically there were 3 alcohol-impaired driving deaths that occurred between 2014 and 2018, which accounts for 11% of all driving-related deaths, according to County Health Rankings. But that is not all, since drug poisoning too led to fatalities, with a drug overdose mortality rate for 2016-2018 of 25 deaths per 100,000 population. Now, evidently, treatment is essential if someone wants to truly overcome their addiction to alcohol and/or drugs, but some people may need a little help to get to that point. Thankfully, interventions are there for this reason, and they can be successful. To help organize a proper intervention, the addict's loved ones will require the help of an interventionist, since this person has specialized training in this field and will be able to guide them through the process. For this family, it will be their chance to share with their loved one how much their addiction has affected them. It will also be an opportunity for them to offer help, usually through attending a treatment program. There will normally be a Plan B in place should the addict decide not to attend treatment, but the hope is that Plan A will succeed, and they will get the help they need.
