The Opioid Epidemic in Sierra County, CA

Sierra County has fortunately not had any deaths caused by opioid overdoses in 2018, which is a relief. But, this does not mean the opioid epidemic is not affecting them. In fact, in 2018, there were 1 523 prescriptions for opioids in the county, which could all possibly lead to opioid addiction, and there was 1 visit to emergency departments that was related to an opioid overdose. What may happen when one starts using opioids for medical purposes is that they may later become addicted and start using them for recreational uses, which is when they can become extremely dangerous. 5.24% of the population aged 12 or older reported using opioid pain relievers for non-medical use in 2014.

Northern Sierra Opioid Safety Coalition

As we've seen above, the opioid epidemic has ravaged Sierra County. But, there is a coalition that has been created to fight back. It is called the Northern Sierra Opioid Safety Coalition (NSOSC). It was established in 2016 and consists of 4 counties. Its goal is to diminish the misuse and abuse of prescription opioids. It is divided into 2 teams. There is the Prevention Action Team, which focuses on promoting prescribing practices that are responsible, making safe drug disposals more accessible, and educating their youth on the dangers of prescription opioids and drugs. Then, there is the Harm Reduction Action Team, whose focus is partly making Naloxone, which is a medicine that reverses an overdose's effects and can save lives, more accessible. They envision a safe community that is free from the harm of opioids.
